Guidance for authors

What we publish:

  • Research articles of 8,000 to 12,000 words, including footnotes.
  • Case notes of 3,000 to 5,000 words on a recent decision.
  • Commentary and essays of 2,000 to 4,000 words.
  • Book reviews of 1,500 to 2,500 words.

Preparing a manuscript:

  • Submit as a single Word or PDF file, double spaced, with numbered pages.
  • Include an abstract of no more than 300 words and up to six keywords.
  • Use OSCOLA citation style throughout, with footnotes rather than endnotes.
  • Remove identifying information from the manuscript itself; put author names, affiliations, and contact details in the covering email.

Review process:

Submissions are first screened by the editorial board for scope and basic form. Research articles that pass screening go to at least two independent reviewers. Expect an initial decision within eight weeks, and a full review outcome within sixteen.

Rights:

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal a non-exclusive licence to publish and distribute the article. Where an article is designated open access, it is distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution licence.

Submitting:

Send the manuscript and covering email to info@bdsil.org with “Journal submission” in the subject line.
